Review: Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Star Wars: The Last Jedi by Jason Fry
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The novelisation for The Last Jedi is, in my opinion at least, certainly better than the one for The Force Awakens. A lot of this has to do with the author and their style of writing. Jason Fry is willing to give much more of a focus on Rey's journey than Alan Dean Foster had, and the novel makes it clear that - at least in this telling - it is she who is the main character we are following. Of course, that's not to say that he skimps on everyone else.

No, we still see all of Canto Bright, Finn and Rose's mission, and Poe's attempt of trying to gain control when feeling left out of knowing what exactly is happening with the Resistance. (Side note: still think Holdo made a big mistake of just not letting people know that there was a plan. More than Poe felt like they had no hope there.) It's good to see the little expanded scenes as well, giving us a taste of what the deleted scenes may be like for the home release of the movie.

However, I would say that a big let down of the novelisation is that there isn't really much insight into other characters' thoughts and feelings, particularly in the case of Luke and Kylo who would have had a lot of interesting thoughts to read on. My personal favourite parts of the story were anything to do with Leia - how she was dealing with her grief and continuing to move forward and lead because someone had to do it. It'll be sad, when IX hits and she won't be there. Carrie Fisher will be missed.

Would I recommend the book? I'm not going to say no, it's worth a read. Just maybe wait till it drops in price a little.
